Why I Care About Climate Crisis (And Why You Should Too)
I never thought I'd talk about climate issues, but here I am.
I’ve always loved spending time in nature, whether it's the mountains or the beaches (No, I can't choose one!). They’ve been my refuge, my reset button. I thought my connection with nature was just about enjoying its beauty, a personal escape from the chaos of daily life. But now, as I spend more time outdoors, I’m beginning to realize something else. It’s not just about the beauty anymore, it’s about the things we’re losing.
I remember a trip with my family a few years ago. We were driving along a highway, the usual excitement of being on the road. My sister, looking out the window, asked if she could roll it down to take in the fresh air. Before she could, my parents stopped her, pointing out that the sky was so grey and polluted.
Then my sister turned to me, confused, and said, "But the sky is always grey."
That simple statement hit me harder than I could’ve imagined. I realized she wasn’t making a point about pollution. To her, that grey sky was normal. It wasn’t an exception but was the standard.
I've always loved the bright, clear blue sky, how the air felt fresh, how it seemed endless. And yet, for my sister, that same sky had already become a distant memory, something she’d never truly known. Her "normal" was far from the world I grew up in. That moment hit me like a wake-up call. I realized that this isn’t just about me anymore. It’s about the world we are leaving behind for the next generations.
The reality is, it’s not just the sky. It’s the oceans that are suffocating, the forests that are burning, the cities that are being smothered by pollution. The very things I’ve always cherished are in danger. The natural beauty we often take for granted is disappearing and if we don’t act soon, it could be lost forever. We can’t afford to ignore that.
But here's the thing. I truly believe we can turn this around. The climate crisis might seem daunting, but it’s not beyond repair so far. Studies show that small, consistent actions can lead to significant impact. It doesn’t require a radical overhaul of your life. By being mindful of how we live, what we consume and how we treat our planet, we can all contribute to the solutions.
I care about the climate because I believe it’s our collective responsibility to protect our planet. Not just for ourselves, but for our children, grandchildren and every future generation that will inherit what we leave behind. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of it all, but we have to start somewhere.
In my future posts, I’ll be sharing my two cents on the science of sustainability and how we can implement small, effective changes in our daily lives to foster a healthier planet.
It’s time we all contribute to the change, big or small. If we don’t step up, what kind of world will we leave behind? Will the future generations inherit a thriving planet or one that's beyond repair? Let's turn this around. I'm in. Are you? It’s one thing to say you’re in, but it takes real action to make a difference. So, are we ready to do more than just talk?
