When we talk about climate change, the conversation often revolves around personal responsibility: buying an EV, recycling, or eating less meat. While these actions are mathematically positive, they completely miss the scale of the problem.

The Grid as a Bottleneck

We can build all the solar panels and wind turbines in the world, but if the electrical grid cannot transmit that power from where it is generated (often remote, windy/sunny areas) to where it is consumed (dense urban centers), the clean energy is wasted.

Currently, the interconnection queues—the waiting lists for new energy projects to connect to the grid—are years long. The bottleneck isn’t the technology to generate clean energy; it’s the physical and bureaucratic infrastructure required to distribute it.

The Software Layer

This is where software engineering intersects with climate. Managing a grid powered by intermittent renewables (the wind doesn’t always blow) requires incredibly sophisticated demand-response software.

We need distributed systems that can intelligently spin up backup storage, curtail industrial demand, and route power dynamically across thousands of miles. It is one of the most complex distributed systems challenges of our generation, and it cannot be solved by simply asking people to turn off their lights.
